Draft Report, Panel on Priorities and Balance

August 26, 1999

The DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (FESAC) Panel on Priorities and Balance has issued its draft report, dated August 25, 1999, following a four day meeting, August 18-21, in Knoxville, Tennessee (FPN99-36). The Panel reviewed the programs and plans of both Magnetic Fusion Energy (MFE) and Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) parts of the DOE Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES) The full FESAC will take up the draft report at a meeting September 8-9, at the Holiday Inn, Gaithersburg, MD (FPN99-36).

The Panel consisted of 36 people from 23 institutions. Dr. Charles Baker (UCSD), a member of FESAC chaired the Panel. The Panel's work was performed by four subpanels and the overall work was integrated by the Panel as a whole. The subpanels and their chairs were:

Balance between MFE and IFE - Ron Davidson (PPPL), Chair
Balance within MFE - Steve Dean (FPA), Chair
Balance within IFE - John Sheffield (ORNL and U.TN), Chair
Proof-of-Principle Priorities - Jeff Freidberg (MIT), Chair
