FESAC Meeting and ITER Matters

The DOE's Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (FESAC) will meet April 17-18 in the DOE Auditorium Building in Germantown, MD. The meetings will begin at 9 AM each day. The purpose of the meeting is to complete the FESAC national review of the ITER Detailed Design Report (See FPN-24, November 15, 1996). Reports from the subpanels reviewing the Detailed Design Report are scheduled to be heard the first day, followed by writing of a FESAC letter report, followed by Presentation of Results to DOE Director of Energy Research, Martha Krebs, at 1 Pm on the second day. Persons wishing to sign up to make 5 minute comments should contact Al Opdenaker at albert.opdenaker@mailgw.Er.Doe.Gov/ A block of rooms has been reserved at the government rate of $89/day at the Hampton Inn, Route 118, Germantown (301-428-1300) held until April 2 under the name "DOE/FESAC."

Another FESAC review is also beginning, to advise DOE on the recommended role of the U.S. In ITER construction. A panel has been established under the chairmanship of Dr. Herman Grunder, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Grunder@cebaf.gov). Other members of the panel are Lee Berry (ORNL), Bill Ellis (Raytheon), Jeff Freidberg (MIT), Katherine Gebbie (NIST), Bruce Montgomery (MIT), Gerald Navratil (Columbia, U.), Hutch Neilson (PPPL), Steve Rosen (Houston Lighting and Power), and Harold Weitzner (NYU). The panel will begin meeting soon and is scheduled to complete its task later this summer.

The DOE is also planning to commission a study by the National Academy of Sciences on the role of the U.S., in the ITER construction phase.
