FY23 U.S. Fusion Budget

The Congress recently passed, and the President signed, an Omnibus Bill funding the current U.S. Fiscal Year (2023) budget, which began October 1, 2022 and ends September 30, 2023.

For Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, the bill provides $763 million, compared to $713 million in FY 2022. Of that, $242 million is provided for the U.S.contribution to the international ITER project, the same as in FY22, and $521 million is for the balance of the program, compared to $471 million in FY22.

For Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) within the NNSA part of DOE, the bill provides $630 million, compared to $580 million in FY22, of which $380 million is for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) compared to $$350 million in FY22, $86 million is for the Omega facility at the University of Rochester compared to $82 million in FY22, and $83 million is for the Z facility at Sandia National Laboratories, compared to $67 million in FY22.
