SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is the first institute demonstrating lasing of a free-electron laser in the hard x-ray regime producing the world-brightest x-rays. The Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) combines this beam with high-energy and high-power lasers to enable unprecedented exploration of the high-energy density physics space.
The mission of SLAC's High-Energy Density science division is to develop this research area and to pursue fusion discovery science. Of particular interest are the areas of dynamic high-pressure physics, warm dense matter, relativistic laser-plasma interactions, and laboratory astrophysics.
