The ILE has been the primary institute in Japan for the development of high power lasers, including the Gekko XII, the Peta-Watt, and other high power lasers. The Primary Mission of ILE, as stated on their web site http://www.ile.osaka-u.ac.jp is to establish the high-energy density science encompassing fusion, astrophysics, as well as other fields, which are related to extreme states of ultra high-density, ultra high-temperature, and ultra high-pressure created through the use of high power lasers. In 2010, the ILE broadened its scope, becoming a "center for joint use and joint research" involving high power laser facilities. Research proposals are invited from all parts of Japan and other countries.
