ITER Council Accepts Report of Independent Review Group

April 28, 2016

The ITER Council convened an Extraordinary Meeting April 27-28 to consider the report from the Independent Review Group they had commissioned to assess the new ITER schedule and associated cost that was previously proposed by the ITER Director General.

The Council "accepted the report" and "acknowledged findings of tangible, on-schedule project performance.". They stated "a solid basis in now emerging for the establishment of the Resourced-Loaded Integrated Schedule up to First Plasma and a high-level paper detailing the schedule from First Plasma to Deuterium-Tritium Operation."

In a press release following the meeting, the Council did not divulge the proposed schedule, but "charged the Director General with completing refinement of the schedule and associated resources (that he presented at the last ITER Council meeting), following iterations with Domestic Agencies and taking into account the recommendations of the (Independent Review Group) and the known constraints of the Members, in time for submission to the ITER Council in June 2016."

The Council stated that the report should "be released immediately for the use of each Member's Government". Neither this report nor the previous recommendations of the Director General have been released to the public.

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz is supposed to advise Congress by May 2 whether the U.S. should withdraw or remain a partner in the ITER project.
