In Memoriam: Julian Dunlap and Jim Anderson

April 27, 2016

Fusion Veterans Julian Dunlap and Jim Anderson passed away in April.

Julian Dunlap was a pioneer of the U.S. fusion program who led the magnetic mirror and ATF stellarator efforts at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He was 84. He received his BS magna cum laude from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1954 and later his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Later in life he suffered from acute rheumatoid arthritis, which may have contributed to his unanticipated death. Messages to his family may be sent to his daughter Leigh at ladunlap2012@gmail.com

Jim Anderson was a world expert on tritium systems. He received his Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry from Florida State University in 1966 and was on the staff of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (1966-2000) where he was noted for the Tritium System Test Facility (TSTA) and for his contributions to the tritium system for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). He served at the Department of Energy (2000-2002) as head of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Project Office. He retired from Los Alamos in 2003, but consulted at a variety of institutes, including a 6 month stint at PPPL as NCSX Project Manager in 2007. A celebration of his life is planned on May 9 at the Niwot United Methodist Church in Longmont, Colorado. Jim's death resulted from lung failure.
