Fusion Veteran Martin Keilhacker Passes
March 11, 2016
It is with sadness that we report that fusion veteran Martin Keilhacker
has passed away. Professor Keilhacker was director of JET from 1992 to
1999. This was the period of JET's first high performance
deuterium-tritium experiment, during which the world records for fusion
power and energy were established. His contributions to the European
fusion programme, first at IPP Garching and then at JET, included also
the development of the divertor as a means of reducing impurity
contamination of the tokamak plasmas and, at ASDEX, leading to the
discovery of the H-mode. After his retirement in 1999, Professor
Keilhacker continued to be involved in energy policy, remaining a strong
advocate for fusion. He will be remembered for his many positive
contributions to fusion science and management.
