President Obama Submits FY 2017 Budget to Congress

President Obama submitted his Fiscal Year 2017 budget requests to Congress on February 9. The budget includes requests for the US Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES) within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science and for the Inertial Confinement Fusion Ignition and High Yield program within the DOE National Nuclear Security Administration.

For OFES, the President requested $398 million, compared to $438 million appropriated by Congress for FY 2016. Of this amount $125 million would be for U.S. contributions to the international ITER project compared to $115 million appropriated by Congress for FY 2016 and $273 million would be for the U.S. domestic fusion effort compared to $323 million appropriated by Congress for FY 2016.

For the Inertial Confinement Fusion Ignition and High Yield program, the President requested $523 million compared to $511 million appropriated by Congress for FY 2016.
