Cherry Murray Confirmed as DOE Office of Science Director

Cherry Murray, a Professor of Physics from Harvard University, has been confirmed by the Senate as Director of the US Department of Energy Office of Science. The US Fusion Energy program is a part of the DOE Office of Science.

Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said, “Dr. Murray will be an outstanding Director of the Office of Science, drawing upon her experience in academia as professor and dean of engineering and applied sciences at one of the country’s leading universities, key R&D leadership roles in industry, and as former head of science and technology at one of the Department’s national laboratories. I thank the Senate for the approving her nomination and look forward to working closely with her as Director.”

For the past year, Murray served as the Benjamin Peirce Professor of Technology and Public Policy and Professor of Physics at Harvard University. Before that, she was dean of Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences from 2009 to 2014. Earlier in her career, she served as principal associate director for science and technology at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, as well as stints at Bell Labs.

Murray holds a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
