Europe Implementing Plan Toward Fusion Power by 2050

May 16, 2014

The European fusion programme has been coordinated by an agency called the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA), currently headed by Francesco Romanelli. The agency has announced (http://www.efda.org/?p=25908) that it will be transformed into a consortium called EUROfusion. The announcement states, "Focusing on ITER and on longer-term development of fusion technology for a fusion demonstration reactor DEMO . . . requires an even more effective pooling of national research efforts".

In 2013, EFDA published a fusion Roadmap that outlines "how to supply fusion electricity to the grid by 2050". EUROfusion is being set up "to implement the Roadmap". The EUROfusion consortium will implement "joint programming co-funded within the framework programme through EURATOM". The consortium members (all fusion laboratories associated with EFDA) will perform coordinated work in accordance with a Consortium Work Plan.

On April 23, the General Assembly of European Fusion Research Units appointed Dutch scientist Tony Donne as Programme Manager for EUROfusion effective June 2. Tony has been head of the Fusion Programme at the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Researcth (DIFFER). He is also a professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology.
