New Division Including Fusion Formed at ORNL
March 26, 2013
Oak Ridge National Laboratory has announced the formation of a new
Fusion and Materials for Nuclear Systems Division (FMNSD). The FMNSD
will be comprised of the current Fusion Energy Division and the
following two groups: Nuclear Fuel Materials and Remote Systems. The
Nuclear Materials Science and Technology Group of the Materials Science
and Technology Division will have a matrix reporting relationship to
FMNSD. This division will have programmatic responsibility for the
Fusion Energy Program including materials in a fusion environment,
theoretical and experimental plasma physics, and plasma enabling
technologies. The division will have a close relationship with the ITER
project. Additionally, this division will have leadership responsibility
in areas that include: nuclear fuels and materials, the DOE Light Water
Reactor Sustainability nuclear materials program, and remote systems
development. Stan Milora, currently Director of the Fusion Energy
Division will lead this Division on an interim basis. A national search
has begun for a Director for the Fusion and Materials for Nuclear
Systems Division.
