Georgia Tech Nuclear Symposium Planned November 1-2

July 31, 2012

The Georgia Tech Nuclear Engineering Department is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Nov. 1-2 with a Symposium on the Future of Nuclear Energy (Nov 1) and a Colloquium on the History and Contributions of NE at Georgia Tech (Nov 2). The intent of the symposium is to bring together leading authorities from government, industry, research laboratories and academia to address the future of nuclear energy.

Sessions are planned on i) Nuclear Energy in the Near-Term, ii) Closing the Nuclear Fuel Cycle, and iii) Nuclear Energy in the Future. The last session features a talk by Mickey Wade on the status of magnetic fusion R&D, a talk by Brad Nelson on ITER, a talk by Bill Stacey on fusion after ITER (Demo, FFH, commercial), and a talk by Steve Zinkle on nuclear materials.

The keynote speaker is Pete Lyons, the Assoc. Sec for Nuclear Energy at DOE. A number of the technical leaders from the nuclear industry and research establishment will also speak. The Symposium also will provide an opportunity to let the nuclear community know that fusion is coming fast and should be included in planning for the future of nuclear energy.

The intent of the "Colloquium on the History and Contributions of NE at Georgia Tech" is to collect and document the history of NE at Georgia Tech and the contributions of Georgia Tech NE alumni and faculty in all those areas of nuclear engineering which have been part of NE at Georgia Tech over the years: i) the physics and engineering of producing power from nuclear fission and nuclear fusion and ii) applications of that technology to health physics, radiological engineering, medical physics, nuclear security, etc.
