Manheimer Summarizes the Case for Fusion-Fission Hybrids

May 2, 2011

Former Naval Research scientist Wally Manheimer, longtime advocate for fission-suppressed hybrid fusion systems has published a summary of the topic in the April 2011 issue of the American Physical Society journal Forum on Physics and Society. The article can be viewed here

Or just go to the APS web site, www.aps.org, click on publications, follow the link to other APS publications and you will find the journal. These are available as Adobe pdf files.

Manheimer comments:

"Recently there have been several proposals for hybrid fusion, some pushed quite aggressively by their proponents. For the most part these are aimed at treating actinide wastes or putting both a fission and fusion reactor in a single facility. I have long argued that the best approach to hybrid fusion is to use fusion neutrons to breed nuclear fuel, to be burned at separate reactors. I continue do do so, despite the Japanese disaster. Of course the entire issue of reactor safety, particularly considering the possibility of extreme events, must be reexamined."
