From 1951-1963, he was section leader of the Thermonuclear Research Section at the Associated Electrical Industries Research Laboratory (Berkshire, U. K.). He spent a year at General Atomics in San Diego in 1960 where, with Tihiro Ohkawa, Harold Forsen and others, he performed work on a toroidal pinch device. From 1963-1965, he was a group leader at the Culham Laboratory and, in 1965, he came to the U.S., joining the Aerojet General Corporation in San Ramon, CA, performing fusion research sponsored by the U. S. Air Force. In 1969, he accepted a senior research position at the University of Texas at Austin, where he worked until his retirement in 1994. He joined Fusion Power Associates as an Individual Affiliate in 1979 and remained a supporter of FPA until the time of his death.
The following tribute was provided by Richard Hazeltine (U. Texas) : "Alan Ware was an exceptionally kind person and a great scientist. I learned enormously from our scientific collaborations, while at the same time finding him a constant source of encouragement and support. Regarding both his intellectual and moral strengths, Alan was and remains a model of scientific excellence. He will be sorely missed by his many friends in the fusion research community."
