Paul Garabedian Passes, Age 82

July 6, 2010

Paul Garabedian, longtime mathematician and fusion research scientist at Stanford and New York University, passed away in New York City May 13 at the age of 82, after a long battle with cancer. During the course of 60 years of research, he made many seminal contributions to computational science, particularly in the areas of magnetohydrodynamics and computational fluid dynamics. He is considered to be one of the premier applied mathematicians of his time. His contributions to fusion research included a suite of computer codes used to study plasma equilibrium, transport and stability. The codes have been used recently to design quasiaxisymmetric stellarators as a possible candidate for a demonstration fusion power plant. A scientific conference will be held in his honor at the NYU Courant Institute during the 2010-2011 academic year. For further information, contact Harold Weitzner: weitzner@cims.nyu.edu
