Significant Cost Increases and Management Changes Forecast for ITER

May 8, 2010

European sources are forecasting that a large cost increase and significant management changes will be the major agenda items when the ITER Council meets in June.

The European Commission has warned the European Parliament and the European Council to expect that Europe's share of ITER construction cost (45%) will "more than double" from an initial estimate of Euro 2.7 billion to Euro 7.2 billion. ITER total construction cost would rise from roughly Euro 5 B to Euro 13 B, or approximately $17 B.

The European-based Nature News reports that it has learned that major changes in ITER management are also in the works. ITER cost, schedule and management have been undergoing scrutiny for the past year by a number of review committees charged by the ITER Council.
