January 3, 2010

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) has bestowed the rank of "Fellow" on Dr. A. Rene Raffray of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Raffray is recognized for his "pioneering computational modeling research that helped solve show-stopper issues for fusion chambers, including opening the inertial fusion energy dry wall design window through inclusion of ion time of flight effects and use of nano-structured tungsten armor; and understanding tritium behavior in ceramic breeder blankets."

Dr Raffray has been a research scientist in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department and Center for Energy Research at UCSD and an active participant in the Congressionally-mandated High Average Power Laser (HAPL) program coordinated by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. Recently, he has joined the ITER Organization in Cadarache, France, as the Blanket Section Leader, responsible for the design and procurement of the ITER blanket and first wall.
