Fusion-Fission Workshop Planned

July 23, 2009

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will sponsor a Fusion-Fission Research (FFR) workshop September 30-October 2, 2009 at the Gaithersburg (Maryland) Hilton. The workshop is co-sponsored by the DOE's offices of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES), Nuclear Energy (NE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Prof. Jeffrey Freidberg (MIT) will chair the workshop; Dr. Phillip Finck (INL) will co-chair.

The workshop will explore technical aspects of various fusion-fission concepts and the reserach needed to further develop them. Topics include the production of fuel for fission reactors, direct electricity production, and closing the nuclear fuel cycle by transmuting spent nuclear fuel from fission reactors.

A public web site has been established at http://web.mit.edu/fusion-fission The web site provides instructions for interested parties to post "white papers" and other information relative to the workshop.

Persons wishing to participate in the workshop in person should contact Curt Bolton at DOE: curt.bolton@science.doe.gov
