Sharpe to Receive FPA Fusion Engineering Award

September 5, 2008

Dr. J. Phillip Sharpe of Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has been selected by Fusion Power Associates Board of Directors as the recipient of the FPA 2008 Excellence in Fusion Engineering Award. These awards, established in 1987 in memory of MIT Professor David J. Rose, have been given annually since that time to recognize individuals in the relatively early part of their careers who have shown both technical accomplishment and potential to become exceptionally influential leaders in the fusion field.

In selecting Dr. Sharpe, the FPA Board notes his many technical accomplishments, including key research on plasma-materials interactions, tritium behavior in materials and inertial fusion blanket design; and his leadership in the important area of fusion reactor safety.

Dr. Sharpe joined the Fusion Safety Program at INL in 2001 after receiving his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University. He has been leading the Fusion Safety Program at INL since 2006. He is noted for his work on tritium retention in materials and dust generation from plasma facing components. He has been heavily involved in the US-Japan collaboration to assess the synergistic effects of tritium and irradiation on plasma facing and blanket materials.

The Award will be presented at Fusion Power Associates annual meeting December 3-4 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Livermore, CA.
