Nardella Named Acting Head of U.S. Fusion Office

Gene Nardella, a veteran of 30 years in the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES), has been appointed Acting Associate Director for Fusion Energy of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC). He brings needed experience and a unique perspective to the position.

An August 1 announcement from Pat Dehmer of DOE reads as follows:

Effective immediately, Mr. Gene Nardella is detailed to the position of Acting Associate Director of Science for Fusion Energy Sciences (FES). Mr. Nardella has over thirty years of experience in the management of science and technology research programs in DOE.

Initially, he worked on design of advanced fuels for the liquid metal fast breeder reactor. In 1978, he moved to the Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program to manage several fusion technology activities including the successful construction, operation and decontamination of the Tritium Systems Test Assembly facility at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Since 2006, he has taken on increasing responsibilities in FES management including serving as the Acting Director of the FES Research Division and as the Technical Assistant to the Associate Director of Science for FES.
