JET Back in Operation
July 9, 2008
The Joint European Torus (JET) resumed operations in April 2008 after
shutting down in April 2007 for upgrades and refurbishment. JET holds the
world record for the production of fusion power in a magnetic confinement
device. JET is considered to be a prototype for ITER.
A number of new capabilities were added to JET during the shutdown,
including an ITER-like Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) system
antenna. The new antenna will be capable of providing 8 MW per square meter
to the plasma surface.
