Tore Supra Celebrates 20-year Anniversary
May 5, 2008
On April 1, scientists celebrated the 20-year anniversary of the operation
of Tore Supra, the world's premier superconducting tokamak fusion
experiment, located in Cadarache, France. The experiment, noted for its
long plasma discharges combined with substantial radio-frequency plasma
heating, has contributed substantially to the knowledge base for future
fusion devices like ITER, which is being built nearby by a consortium of
the world's leading fusion research nations.
Among the dignitaries present was Robert Aymar, former head of the ITER
design team and currently director of CERN. Aymar directed some of his
remarks to young scientists, saying they should "always keep a long-range
view of the future by always preparing the next step."
Congratulations to our colleagues at Tore Supra for all their
accomplishments.
