ITER News

July 25, 2007

Six of the seven ITER Parties have ratified the ITER agreement. China is expected to ratify the agreement shortly. At the second meeting of the Interim ITER Council, July 11- 12, U. S. Department of Energy Under Secretary Raymond Orbach told the Council "The United States is pleased to inform the other Members that we have deposited our instrument of acceptance with the IAEA and that we have been making regular financial contributions to sustain the ITER Organization during their early operations."

This is likely the last "interim" meeting of the Council. The ITER Council will hold its first "official" meeting November 27-28. The Council also took note of an expression of interest to join the ITER project from the country of Kazakhstan.

At a 4-day meeting during the week of July 16 in Cadarache, experts from the seven ITER Parties held the first Design Integration Review Meeting. The meeting resulted in the identification of 104 proposed Design Change Requests. A second meeting is scheduled for September, with the goal of a new, agreed-upon design by the end of the year.

Four of the seven ITER Parties have now established Domestic Agencies for ITER. The EU opened its Domestic Agency in Barcelona June 28 and appointed Dr. Didier Gambier as Director on July 17. The EU, India, Japan and the US have now established Domestic Agencies, which will be the vehicles for procuring the in-kind ITER hardware contributions from their respective Parties, as well as provide other support to the ITER Organizaion.
