Acad. Tolok was tapped by Acad. I. V. Kurchatov in 1960 to develop a stellarator fusion research program at the Kharkov (Ukraine) Institute of Physics and Technology (KIPT). From 1966 - 1987 he oversaw all fusion research at KIPT.

After leaving KIPT in 1988, he organized and headed the laboratory on vacuuum-plasma technology in the physico-technical faculty of the Kharkov National University. He has published over 200 scientific papers in various journals and in 2001 published "A History of Stellarators in the Ukraine" in the Journal of Fusion Energy.

The Distinguished Career Award was presented to Acad. Tolok at a celebration at the KIPT in honor of his 80th birthday.
