COVER TEXT
This state-of-the-art textbook assembles material from various sources in a systematic and concise way for a modern course on the physics of magnetically confined plasmas aimed at graduate and advanced undergraduate students. It both presents the fundamental theories and methodologies of fusion plasma physics and introduces the topics of current research. Each chapter is rounded off with a set of exercises. It is also a useful reference for workers in the field.

Weston M. Stacey is Callaway Regents' Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His career spans 40+ years of research and teaching in nuclear reactor physics, fusion plasma physics and fusion reactor conceptual design. He led the IAEA INTOR Workshop (1979-88) which established an international consensus on the feasibility, physical characteristics and R&D requirements of a fusion experimental reactor that led to the present ITER project, for which he was awarded the US Dept. of Energy Distinguished Associate Award and 2 DoE Certificates of Appreciation. He is the author of about 250 research papers and 6 previous books, including the textbooks Fusion Plasma Analysis (1981), Fusion: An Introduction (1984), and Nuclear Reactor Physics (2001) published by Wiley-Interscience. Prof. Stacey is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and of the American Physical Society. He is the recipient of the American Nuclear Society Seaborg Medal for Nuclear Research, Wigner Reactor Physics Award, and Outstanding Achievement in Fusion Award; of the Georgia Tech Outstanding Faculty Research Author Award; of the Sigma Xi Sustained Research Award; and of other recognitions of his work.
