New Plasma Textbook Published

May 22, 2006

Cambridge University Press has just published a new textbook on plasma physics: Fundamentals of Plasma Physics by Paul Bellan (California Institute of Technology). The book is available from Cambridge Press directly or from Amazon.com.

The book is described at the Cambridge link http://www.cambridge.org/us/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=0521821169 which has sublinks to the table of contents, index, and preface (http://assets.cambridge.org/052182/1169/frontmatter/0521821169_frontmatter.pdf).

The text is relevant to diverse plasma applications, such as controlled fusion, astrophysical plasmas, solar physics, magnetospheric plasmas, and plasma thrusters. After developing the basic plasma equations from first principles, the book explores single particle motion with particular attention to adiabatic invariance. The author then examines types of plasma waves and the issue of Landau damping. Magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and stability are tackled with emphasis on the topological concepts of magnetic helicity and self-organization.
