Decker Named Acting Head of U. S. Fusion Program

Dr. James Decker, Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, has been named Acting Director of the Department's Office of Fusion Energy Sciences, effective with the retirement of Dr, N. Anne Davies on April 3. Decker has been Deputy Director of the Office of Science for a couple of decades and, during the 1970s, was Director of the fusion program's Applied Plasma Physics Division.

In making the appointment, Office of Science Director Raymond Orbach issued the following statement:

"Dr. Anne Davies will be retiring at the beginning of April. I have asked that Dr. James Decker serve as the Acting Associate Director for Fusion Energy Sciences until the position can be filled.

"I want to thank Dr. Davies for her leadership of the fusion program and wish her the very best in retirement."
