India Joins ITER Project

December 15, 2005

At a meeting December 6 in Korea, India joined the original six ITER Parties (EU, China, Japan, Korea, Russia, and US) as part of the ITER Project aimed at building the world's first fusion engineering test reactor.

The Parties agreed to provide an additional ten percent reserve funding for the project, so that the contributions would add up to 110 percent of the original ITER construction cost estimate, with the EU providing 50 % and the other five Parties contributing 10% each. The previous provisional allocation of ITER hardware contributions was redistributed to include India, in proportion to the Parties' financial commitment, with each Party contributing also to the new cash reserve account.

Sources indicated that the draft ITER agreement is nearing final, with only a few remaing issues to be resolved. It is hoped to resolve these issues and to have the agreement initialed by the governments in February, with a final adoption and formal signing by all governments by Summer 2006.

The ITER site in Caderache was recently dedicated and movement of personnel to the site has begun. The next major step in ITER organization is the selection of a deputy to the ITER Director General, Kaname Ikeda of Japan. The deputy would be the ITER construction project manager and is expected to be selected from the EU.
