IFMIF Design Report Issued
February 13, 2004
A Comprehensive Design Report has been published for the International
Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF). The design had been a
several year activity of the International Energy Agency (IEA) under an
"Implementing Agreement for a Program of Research and Development on Fusion
Materials." Scientists from the European Union, Canada, Japan, Russia and
the United States contributed to the study. The primary mission of the
facility, as stated, is "to generate a materials irradiation database for
the design, construction, licensing, and safe operation of a Fusion
Demonstration Reactor (Demo)."
The study assumes a detailed engineering design phase beginning in 2005,
leading to a construction decision in 2009. Half-power operation would
commence in 2016 and full power operation in 2019. Full power operation is
then projected for the next 20-30 years. The estimated cost of the
engineering design is $88 million. Construction cost is estimated at $540
million (2003 dollars). Installation and checkout is estimated to cost an
additional $117 million.
