On the 28h of July, 2003, Vsevolod Tel'kovsky, founding father of the Plasma Physics Department of the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute (State University) , passed away at the age of 82.

Vsevolod Tel'kovsky was born on the 24th of July, 1921, in Kostroma (Russia). After the second world war, he studied physics at the Physical Engineering Faculty of MEPhI Than he worked in LIPAN (now RSC "Kurchatov Centre"). He received his doctorate in 1960. He worked with M.C.Ioffe and academician Lev A. Artsimovich. He was awarded with the Soviet Union State Prize for the suppression of the MGD plasma instabilities in the mirror traps.

In 1961 he was appointed as the Head of plasma physics Department of Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute in which he remained till 1990. During his professorship, he educated a large number (about 700) students and 10 of Ph.D students, some of whom have now been appointed professor themselves.

At the occasion of his retirement in 1990 he was awarded as a Honoured worker of the Russian science and technology. After his retirement as a head of department he delivered lectures on Fusion Science and Plasma Physics for undergraduate students of MEPhI. He published with Prof.Victor Khrabrov the notebook on Fusion Devices.(In Russian) . The book is still very popular for the students of Plasma Physics Department of MEPhI.

Through his scientific qualities and his inspiring personality Vsevolod Telkovsky has played a major role in the build-up of the of the education in the field of plasma physics controlled fusion.
