He came to UCLA as a Visiting Research Professor in 1973, returned in 1986-87 as a Regents Lecturer and served as an Acting Professor from 1989-92. In 1992, he agreed to accept a tenured Professorship at UCLA while also serving in France as the Director of Research at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), and as the Director of of the National Center for Space Studies (CNES). Since 1995, Rene served as the High Commissioner of the Commissariat a L'Energie Atomique (CEA) while continuing his appointment with UCLA. In his position with the CEA, he was one of the most important voices and supporters of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project. His influence and behind-the-scenes discussions with his counterparts in numerous countries was extremely important for building momentum and causing this project to coalesce to a likely reality. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and colleagues in the fusion community around the world.
