Fusion Pioneer Kees Braams Passes Away

July 30, 2003

On the 29th of July, 2003, Kees Braams, founding father of the Dutch research on nuclear fusion, suddenly passed away at the age of 78.

He was born on the 5th of July, 1925, in the Netherlands, where he also spent his youth. After the second world war, he studied physics and mathematics at the Utrecht University, where he received his doctorate in 1952. His qualities as a physicist quickly became apparent. In 1952 a number of prize-winning publications of his hand were published, on the phenomenon of the so-called tippe top, a top that spontaneously turns itself around when spinning.

In 1965 he received his Ph.D., about a subject in nuclear physics, with first class honours. Part of the work was carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, USA. When he returned to the Netherlands, he was involved in the foundation of the FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics in Nieuwegein.

From the foundation in 1956 to his retirement in 1987 he was the director of the institute. In 1962 he was appointed professor in plasma physics at the Utrecht University, which he remained till 1987. During his professorship, he educated a large number of Ph.D. students, some of whom have now been appointed professor themselves.

At the occasion of his retirement in 1987 he was awarded a royal decoration. After his retirement, together with Peter Stott, he wrote the book Nuclear Fusion, half a century of magnetic confinement fusion research, on the history of nuclear fusion research. The book was published by the end of last year (FPN02-52). Braams was still very active in engaging public interest in fusion research, of which he has always been a untiring and well-spoken advocate.

Through his scientific qualities and his inspiring personality Kees Braams has played a major role in the build-up of the field of plasma physics. His activities often brought him in a large number of national and international committees and councils, often in the role of chairman. His enthusiasm, his vision and his keen insights in scientific questions have formed an important and lasting contribution to the prosperous development of nuclear fusion research, both in the Netherlands, and abroad.
