World Energy Projections

July 10, 2003

World energy consumption will double by 2030, according to a European Union Study. The report, "World Energy, Technology and Climate Change Policy Outlook 2030" (EUR20366) also concludes that countries are falling behind their Kyoto Protocol targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The report projects that world oil production will increase by about 65% by 2030, with about 60% of that coming from OPEC, compared to 40% today. It predicts that Europe will rely more and more on natural gas coming from Russia and the Middle East. Gas production is projected to double, according to the report, which also projects that gas and oil prices will increase significantly. The report projects that wind power will account for about a 4% share of energy production by 2030.
