Heavy Ion Fusion News

May 8, 2002

Progress in Heavy Ion inertial confinement fusion is being reported and archived at a new web site: http://hifnews.lbl.gov

Progress reports are issued ten times per year. Archived reports go back to March 2001. The reports are edited by Art Molvik (molvik1@llnl.gov).

The current issue describes a proposal for a major upgrade of the GSI Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility, as reported by Peter Spiller. In the same issue, Edil Mustafin describes theoretical and experimental evidence aimed at reducing induced structural activation from neutrons produced by "lost ions" in a power plant accelerator. Tom Cowan and Hartmut Ruhl describe plans to study certain aspects of HIF beam propagation, beam-target interactions and future driver design by using available sources of laser-accelerated ions.
