Theory of 3D Systems Workshop Report

March 20, 2002

The growing world effort on stellarator experiments has been accompanied by increased activity on the theory of three-dimensional magnetic confinement topologies. A "Workshop on Future Directions in Theory of 3D Magnetic Confinement Systems" was held January 7-9 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Thirty-eight researchers from 4 laboratories and 7 universities attended.

The Workshop organizers, Don Batchelor, Allen Boozer, C. C. Hegna, and Allan Reiman have produced a Summary Report. The report endeavors "to extract from the discussion a short list of key issues to two sorts: (1) those of some urgency where progress is needed in the near term, and (2) important areas for which development will be necessary over an extended period."
