The Reno-Tahoe Area
Reno is situated in a broad valley of the Truckee River on the eastern
slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and on the western boundary of the
Great Basin high desert, just 35 miles from Lake Tahoe. Reno weather is
temperate due to the mountainous location and the elevation of 4500 feet
with average temperatures ranging in early August from highs
of about 90 F to lows of about 45 F. The major industry in Reno is tourism
and big names in show business can frequently be found in the Reno-Sparks
and Lake Tahoe entertainment centers. Fine restaurants and nightclubs
exist in abundance. Ran McNally's Vacation Places Rated has ranked the
Reno-Tahoe area as the number one location in the Nation for outdoor sports
activities. Twenty golf courses lie within an hour's drive from Reno.
Reno is surrounded by public lands that provide hiking and mountain-biking
opportunities. To the north and east of the city, the rugged mountains and
isolation of the Great Basin desert challenge adventurous outdoor
enthusiasts with country as wild and remote as can be found in the West,
including National Forests and National Wilderness Areas. Other
attractions within short driving distance include the Black Rock Desert
where the supersonic, land-speed record was established in 1997 by the
Thrust SSC British team, and historic Virginia City, site of the 1870,s
Comstock Load silver bonanza. Beyond the local area, Yosemite, Lassen
Volcanic, Great Basin, Redwood, Crater Lake, Death Valley, Sequoia and
King's Canyon National Parks are located within a day's drive from Reno.
