About 200 researchers from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory came
together on the evening of March 25 to say goodbye to Laser Program leader
Mike Campbell, who has joined General Atomics in San Diego
(FPN00-2). As
part of the occasion, Campbell's associates ran the following ad in the
March 24 Valley Times:
THANK YOU MICHAEL CAMPBELL
- for knowing all our names
- for believing in our crazy ideas
- for wearing roller blades, pink tutus, blue jeans and crazy ties
- for sending us notes in the margins of our papers
- for listening
- for acknowledging your own humanness and not necessarily having all the
answers
- for engaging our hearts as well as our minds
- for communicating your personal philosophies in those late evening
sessions
- for creating the vision of a NIF and the leadership to make it happen
- for creating options in a bureaucratic system
- for harassing us, by name, in all-hands meetings
- for "all those apologies" when running late
- for communicating that the possibilities of the future can be ours
- for "publish, publish, publish"
- for being approachable to everyone
- for creating a fun work environment that values Science
- for coaching us how to move the boulders from our paths
- for helping roll some of those boulders out of the way
- for holding us accountable
- for knowing we really could stretch beyond our current abilities and
providing stretchhhhh opportunities
- for painting a future vision so vivid and "real" that it was easy to see
ourselves in the midst of it
- for convincing us that our efforts really were part of something much
bigger than any one of us could accomplish alone
- for believing we were future leaders, even when we did not quite believe
it ourselves
- for creating dreams and turning them into reality; with hardware and
with people!!!!
YOU WILL ALWAYS BE AN INSPIRATION TO US.
THANK YOU FROM EACH AND EVERYONE OF US IN THE LASER LEADERSHIP GROUP
