FES says "the Enabling Science and Partnerships (ESP) Division will play a critical role in achieving fusion. The Division will establish innovative public-private partnership initiatives such as a fusion energy Public-Private Consortium Framework (PPCF) together with input from private sector to help invest in strategic infrastructure to help accelerate fusion development. This Division supports multidisciplinary, multiā€institutional team research that addresses critical scientific and technology gaps and brings together discovery science, innovation, and translational research. The ESP Division supports partnerships with the fusion private sector to accelerate viability of fusion energy by combining efforts to resolve common scientific and technological challenges. The Division also supports the development of novel materials, nuclear science capabilities, and enabling technologies that can withstand enormous heat and neutron exposure, breed the fuel, and maintain the fusion plasma all of which is critical in making fusion a self-sustaining energy source for future fusion devices. The ESP Division supports the development of diagnostics that can measure key performance parameters of the fusion plasma and be capable of withstanding the harsh fusion environment and exploring and expanding the practical applications of plasmas for use in other areas such as plasma processing in microelectronics, nanomaterial synthesis, manufacturing techniques, and plasma medicine."
